Just found this post on the macrumers forum. It’s for getting NTFS read and write permissions on Mac OSX, this is usually used on formatted external hard drives. For my own future reference but also for others, here it is:

iBlacky of the same forum posted a better method. Basically, it’s running mount_ntfs with read/write option specified.

Here’s how it’s done in Terminal:

sudo mv /sbin/mount_ntfs /sbin/mount_ntfs.orig

sudo nano /sbin/mount_ntfs

#!/bin/sh
/sbin/mount_ntfs.orig -o rw “$@”

(press Enter, Ctrl-O, Enter, Ctrl-X in sequence)

sudo chown root:wheel /sbin/mount_ntfs
sudo chmod 755 /sbin/mount_ntfs

Make sure to check that mount_ntfs is listed as -rwxr-xr-x and root wheel when you type ls -al /sbin/mount_ntfs and you’re good to go.

P.S.
If it isn’t working for you, it may be that the NTFS partition wasn’t cleanly unmounted previously (e.g. not using safe eject in Windows). To check if this is the case, open Console in Utilities, and go to ‘All Messages’ instead of ‘Console Messages’. Search for ‘ntfs’ and you may come across an error that displays like this:

NTFS-fs error (device /dev/disk3s1, pid 435): ntfs_system_inodes_get(): $LogFile is not clean. Mounting read-only. Mount in Windows.

You need to plug the disk into Windows-running system, and do a safe eject. Then the NTFS partition will mount in read/write mode.

In case you don’t like it:
sudo mv /sbin/mount_ntfs.orig /sbin/mount_ntfs

So I just installed Windows 7. I’ve used to work with the public RC1 and I was pretty happy with it! One thing is still bothering me tho, and that is the support of Creative. I have a Creative X-Fi Titanium because I wanted to use the optical connection. I had trouble making it work with Windows Vista and with Windows 7 RC1, now it’s still a problem! The creative website let’s you download the latest drivers and the Console Launcher you want to use to configure your soundcard. However it doesn’t show the Dolby Digital or the DTS pack you can download for Vista and you want for nice (no stereo) optical output!

Well it’s actually quite simple! Download the drivers from Windows Update (if you use the creative driver, Windows will actually tell you it has an updated creative driver) for your creative card and download the console launcher from the creative site. Next you download the DTS and/or the DD packs from Vista and install those for Windows 7. It works for me, I have a nice DTS stream coming in my Logitech Z-5500

People in The Netherlands know what I am talking about in this post, it’s about the commercial UPC send out some time now.In the commercial you see a big sort of pipe where people walk through, this is supposed to be a ADSL line for internet. The pipe is quite small and people walk trough it with bend backs, it doesn’t go very fast because they wear heavy things like a music instrument, a TV and some more of that stuff. It’s a nice way to show that ADSL can be slower then you expected. The commercial is shown at the bottom of this post.

Cable is a other way to get internet here in The Netherlands, it’s faster and has a constant speed. The only thing that bugs me about cable is that UPC uses traffic shaping on it, in other words they cut down the speed on specific ports so you can’t download movies and music on full speed. My counter commercial uses this and displays a big pipeline that is being crushed by a man from UPC, you can see that websites load really fast but the music is walking really slow because of that man. A other thing that can be displayed is the fact that you share your internet connection with your neighbors, if your neighbors download really fast then you will have slower internet, why you ask? Because you use the one and same cable. From users around me I hear that this isn’t exactly true anymore, it’s still there but the consequences are far less then in the beginning.

Well, I just hope someone will work this out

Veel e-mail providers bieden verschillende manieren aan om je e-mail op te halen. Bij gmail (maar ook bij andere providers) kun je gebruik maken van POP3 of IMAP, wat is beter? Als eerst de verschillen.

POP3 haalt je e-mail op en bewaart dit op de lokale computer. Je kunt ervoor kiezen om de e-mail ook op de server te laten staan waardoor je dus eigenlijk een kopie binnen haalt.

IMAP haalt alleen de zogenaamde headers op van al je e-mail berichten. In principe kun je dit zien als de buitenkant van je e-mail, van wie is de e-mail, wat voor onderwerp, wanneer, hoe laat en hoe groot. Het bericht zelf wordt niet gedownload. De mappen structuur die je (in dit geval bij gmail) online hebt staan wordt tevens ook meegenomen in je e-mail client op je computer. Je download veel minder en alles blijft op de server staan, niet lokaal. Voordeel is ook dat zodra je een e-mail binnen krijgt je dit ook meteen in je e-mail cliënt ziet.

IMAP klinkt dus ideaal! Het binnen halen van je e-mail is erg snel, en bij een crash ben je niet al je e-mail kwijt. Ik heb de afgelopen 2 weken IMAP geprobeerd maar ik ben er niet tevreden over. Ik maak gebruik van Microsoft Office Outlook. Standaard kan je het bericht (als preview) zien in je e-mail client als je deze selecteert. Wat er nu gebeurt is zodra ik e-mail binnen krijg en er een preview getoond wordt het bericht eerst gedownload moet worden. Bij POP3 wordt alles van te voren gedownload en wordt het bericht dus gelijk getoond, alleen duurt het aan het begin wat lang. Bij IMAP wordt het binnen halen van de e-mail aan het begin weg gehaald maar wordt elk bericht afzonderlijk gedownload wanneer je het nodig hebt.

Ik vindt het behoorlijk irritant dat elke keer als ik een e-mail wou lezen deze als eerst gedownload moest worden. Het duurt niet lang, maar als je moet wachten duurt al snel iets (te) lang. Maak je weinig gebruik van je e-mail dan kan je voor IMAP kiezen. Maak je echter veel gebruik van je e-mail dan kan je beter voor POP3 kiezen en ervoor zorgen dat er een kopie achter blijft bij je e-mail provider. Als je dan ook je e-mail cliënt instelt om elke 5 minuten op mail te checken heb je bijna de voordelen van IMAP te pakken.
